PCA tennis breezes into state semifinals

Palmetto Christian tennis knocked off St. Andrews, 8-1, in the opening round of the SCISA A-AA playoffs Monday at Family Circle Center on Daniel Island.

The top-seeded Eagles gave up just 15 games through a clean sweep of the five singles matches.

Palmetto Christian No. 1 Austin Heinz shutout Jack Wally, 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 Luke Prendergast defeated Joseph Hobenstein, 6-4, 6-4. No. 3 Michael Pernell downed Sam Powers, 6-1, 6-1. Brandon Kassous topped Matthew Hall, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. P.J. Noce defeated Ben Cooper, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, and Matthew Bottone beat Melanie Ourhan, 6-0, 6-3 to complete the singles sweep.

Wally and Hobenstein earned St. Andrew’s only victory with an 8-1 win over Prendergast and Kassous at No. 1 doubles. Pernell and Noce beat Hall and Cooper, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles while Botton and Van Diggerstaff beat Power and Will Cohn, 8-1, at No. 3.

Palmetto Christian (5-5) hosts Christian Academy in the state playoffs semifinals Wednesday at Family Circle. No. 3 seeded Christian Academy upset No. 2 seed Trinity-Byrnes, 5-4, Monday with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
