Wando track sits atop the boys and girls leaderboards after day one of the Class AAAA Region VII meet Wednesday at West Ashley High School.
Wando's three-time defending region champion girls team racked up 72 points and closed the day with a 41-point lead over second-place Cane Bay. The seven-time defending boys team scored 48 points and trails Stratford by just one point for first.
Liam Emery, Luke Daniell, Scott Stroman, Matias Montiel, Robert DaCosta and Zach Davis combined to take first (8:33.67) in the boys 800-meter relay by nearly seven seconds. Meagan Caraway, Emma Santor, Emily Pitts, Rosa Marie Compton, Madison Paraskeva and Sophie Mitchell took first (10:06.38) for the girls, more than eight seconds ahead of second-place Stratford.
Kendall Mercer took first (5-0.00) and Haley Baker second (J5-0.00) in the girls high jump. Mercer finished second (J10-06.00) in girls pole vault, Sarah Lee took third (10-00), Taylor Arent fourth and Gracie Taylor fifth. Bailey Hart placed second (J13-06.00) in the boys pole vault.
Angelica Collins earned first (17-08.00) in the girls long jump, first (36-09.50) in the triple jump and ran the fastest 100-meter dash in the preliminary heats. Kenny Waring took first (20-03.50) in the boys long jump, just edging out teammate Peter Pinkney (20-01.5). Waring also ran the fastest time in the 100-meter prelims. Chance Price earned first (42-08.75) in the boys triple jump.
Terrell Venning finished second (149-00) in the boys discus throw. Monea Akinjobi took second (101-04) for the girls, Emily Kuester third (89-11) and Molly van Vilet fourth.
