Baseball playoffs: Wando beats Dutch Fork, headed to district title game

Wando rolled past Dutch Fork, 6-3, in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs Friday in Irmo.

Wando (16-8) advances to host the District VIII title game Wednesday against either Ashley Ridge, Carolina Forest or Dutch Fork, who will play Saturday and Monday.

Warriors senior right-hander Mark Evans picked up the complete game win, allowing three runs, two earned, off five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Wando jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Trevor Pedersen lined a double to center to score Owen Ravenel and Harrison Smith. Oliver Hill tripled to left field to drive in Pedersen and Tyler Ackard.

Dutch Fork countered with three runs in the bottom frame. JoJo Markle doubled to right field to score Austin Ruger. Derek Olenchuk singled in Ward Hacklin and Markle scored off a passed ball.

Evans shut down Dutch Fork the rest of the night, allowing no hits, just a single walk and one infield error.

Smith reached on a fielder’s choice in the fifth to score Mark Fries, and Pedersen drove in Andrew Lee with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Hill finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Lee hit 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Erik Holton suffers the loss for Dutch Fork, lasting just 1 2/3 innings after allowing four earned runs off three hits and a walk.
