Wando track wins boys and girls Region VII titles

The streaks continue for Wando boys and girls track and field in Class AAAA Region VII.

Wando captured both the boys and girls titles this week at the Region VII meet at West Ashley High School. The wins mark the boys' eighth consecutive region title and the fourth straight for the girls.

The Warriors entered day two with a 41-point lead in the girls standings and one point off of first place in the boys standings. Wando girls finished with 163 total points, 103 ahead of second-place Stratford. The boys tallied 126 to finish 29 points ahead of the Stratford boys team.

Wando dominated the 100-meter dash, taking first and second in boys and girls finals. Kenny Waring finished first overall (10.79) followed by Peter Pinkney in second (10.93). Angelica Collins won first (12.23) for the girls and Cierra Smalls took second (12.65).

Waring also took second (22.22) and Pinkney third (22.44) in the 200. Zeniyah Lawrence finished first (25.35) in the girls 200 by nearly a full second.

Sarah Lee finished first (1:01.22) in the girls 400, and Michaela Henderson took second (1:02.78). Matias Montiel won first (2:04.46) in the boys 800, while Megan Caraway took second (2:25.52) in the girls.

Logan Veatch finished second (4:38.85) in the boys 1,600 and first (10:20.92) in the 3,200. Jacob Spencer finished second (10:24.29) in the 3,200. Rosa Marie Compton won first (5:33.59) in the girls 1,600 and first (11:44.72) in the 3,200. Madison Paraskeva took third (5:50.72) in the 1,600.

Kato Junior placed third (15.40) in the boys 100 hurdles and first (55.82) in the 400 hurdles. Sydney Langley took second (1:08.82) in the girls 400 hurdles.

Wando boys and girls swept the 100-meter and 800-meter relays. Wando girls took second in the 400 relay.

The Warriors now set their sights on the state qualifier May 10 at Spring Valley High School in Columbia. The state championships follow May 16-17 at Spring Valley.
