Bishop England softball fell, 20-9, to Bamberg-Ehrhardt in the opening round of the Class AA playoffs Thursday on Daniel Island.

With their everyday starting pitcher out of town, the Lady Bishops struggled to find an answer on the mound, allowing 15 hits, seven walks and a hit batter.

Bishop England falls into the lower bracket of District VI and will travel to Barnwell Saturday for an elimination game.

Bishop England (8-6) struck early in the first inning with a Sophie Berg sacrifice RBI to score leadoff hitter Elena Salmorin from first base. Bamberg answered with a triple to leadoff the second inning that turned into the tying run after a Bishops passed ball. Bamberg rang up 10 runs in the third inning. The Raiders scored twice off passed balls, once off an error and drove out a two-run home run in the charge.

Trailing 12-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bishops took advantage of a Raiders pitching change and rallied off seven runs to climb back into the game. Claire Moore scored off a bad pickoff attempt; Berg singled to score Katie Browning, and Anna Marie drove in Salmorin all before the first out. Berg was walked home; Caroline McQueeney drove in Eran Artigues and Corder with a single to right, and Rachel Hannan doubled down the left-field line to score McQueeney.

Bamberg countered with eight runs in the fifth inning. The Raiders tallied five hits, two walks, and saw every player in the lineup reach base.

Trailing 20-8, Bishop England needed to cut the deficit to singled digits to play past the fifth inning. Artigues doubled to score Salmorin with one out. Corder followed with a double in the next at-bat, but Bamberg retired the next two batters to end the game and earn the playoff win.

Artigues finished 2 for 3 with a walk, an RBI and run scored; Salmorin hit 3 for 4 with three runs scored and Corder 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored to lead Bishop England.
