Bishop England senior Sarah Santos signed a letter of intent with Winthrop Eagles volleyball last month.
Santos helped Bishop England to two Class AA state championships in 2012 and 2013 as the team’s starting libero. She was named All-Lowcountry her junior and senior seasons and co-captain of the Lady Bishops in 2013.
“It feels like everything I’ve worked so hard for is finally paying off,” Santos said. “Winthrop was a school I could see myself at even without playing volleyball. I loved the campus and coaches and I’m looking forward to meeting the team, getting to know them and seeing what being an Eagle has in store for me.”
As a senior, she was selected to the Dorman Tournament of Champions, Porter-Gaud Invitational and Wando Invitational all-tournament teams. She helped guide her club team, MVP U18 Gold, to a fourth-place finish out of 54 teams in this year’s Big South National Qualifier 18 USA division.
Winthrop competes in the Big South Conference of NCAA Division I volleyball. The Eagles finished 17-13 overall this season, 11-3 at home and were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Big South tournament.
“Sarah is an aggressive player who will help solidify our passing and defensive game, both of which are areas we feel we fell short in this past season,” Winthrop head coach Bruce Atkinson said in a release. “We are excited to see what Sarah will bring to the court and watch her development over the next four years.”
