Palmetto Christian boys tennis fell, 6-2, to Spartanburg Day in the SCISA Class A-AA state championship Monday in Cayce.
It's the second consecutive year Spartanburg Day has dealt the perennial champion Eagles a runner-up finish in the state finals.
Palmetto Christian played strong at the top with wins by senior No. 1 Austin Heinz and No. 2 Luke Prendergast. Heinz downed Anders Ike with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while Prendergast battled Matthew Poliokoff to a 7-5, 6-4 win.
“I could not have asked for a better effort from our team,” Eagles head coach Dewey Caulder said. “Austin and Luke gave us a chance going into doubles. I put in a doubles lineup where we had to sweep.”
But the Eagles stumbled through the bottom of the singles ladder, combining to win eight games through losses at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. P.J. Noce played the most competitive match of the Eagles' singles losses, falling 6-2, 7-5 to Rhett Foust.
Heinz teamed up with Noce at No. 1 doubles, and Prendergast with Michael Pernell at No. 2 doubles, but neither team could pull off a win.
“Their effort was huge, but we came up a little short,” Caulder said. “Some of the boys played before more people than they have before. Great experience for the future.”
Palmetto Christian finishes the season 6-6 overall.
