Daniel Island Neighborhood Association votes to not seek annexation

  • Wednesday, May 7, 2014

The Post and Courier is reporting that the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association voted Tuesday to abandon its annexation effort, officials said.

Residents of the 4,000-acre island, which is in the city of Charleston and Berkeley County, began studying the issue last summer after the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association and the Daniel Island Property Owners Association met with lawyers to determine if there was interest in switching counties.

At issue were schools, roads, taxes, 911 service, mosquito abatement and curbside recycling.

Ten percent of the island's voters signed a petition and Gov. Nikki Haley appointed a commission that includes Michael White and John Tiencken, both of Daniel Island, Shirley Hinson of Goose Creek and John West of Moncks Corner to look into the feasibility of annexing.
