Harvey Galloway PROVIDED

More than 500 Charleston Southern University undergraduate and graduate students received their degree at commencement activities Saturday. The ceremony was held at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Harvey L. Galloway, executive director of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina Foundation, was guest speaker. Galloway has 43 years of experience with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, and its owned companies.

Galloway's work to improve healthcare in South Carolina was recognized in 2008 with the Palmetto Patriot award. He holds a bachelor's degree from Presbyterian College and did his graduate work in managed health care administration at the Block School of Business at the University of Missouri in Kansas City.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina Foundation awarded more than $7 million in 2013. Their priority funding areas are: childhood/adolescent health, community health, health care and free medical clinics, mental health, nursing issues, prevention of obesity and research on special projects.

This Saturday, Galloway encouraged Charleston Southern graduates to “begin thinking of your life as writing your very own story.”

Galloway said Commencement marks the beginning of the next chapter of life.

“You and you alone are the only one who can live your life, using your gifts, that writes your story, a story which I believe each one of you were meant to tell,” said Galloway, referring to Saturday's Class of 2014. “This world needs your story, every single one of you, because as you tell that story, you have the ability to inspire others to find their place.”

The ceremony also included Charleston Southern University's annual honors such as the Excellence in Teaching Award given to Todd Heldreth, DVM.
