Angelica Collins and Kenny Waring both set new Wando records at the Class AAAA track and field qualifier Saturday at Spring Valley High in Columbia.
Waring won the boys 100-meter dash in 10.61 seconds, nearly a tenth of a second faster than his 2012 state championship time. Collins finished third in the girls 100 at 11.91. Both are new school records.
Athletes must finish in the top eight of an event to qualify for the state championship meet May 16-17 back at Spring Valley.
Waring finished sixth (21.93) in the 200 and fourth (22-01.5) in the long jump. Collins won the triple jump (38-06) by four inches and finished fourth (18-04) in the long jump. Waring was also part of Wando’s 100-meter relay team that placed third (42.48). Collins helped the girls 100-meter relay team to a first-place finish (47.35) that would have set a new state championship record.
Peter Pinkney finished eighth (22.11) in the 100 and Junior Kato took second (55.41) in the 400 hurdles. Gauge Wood placed fifth (13-00) in the pole vault, Chance Price fourth (44-07.5) in the triple jump and Terrel Venning seventh (149-09) in the discus throw.
