Bishop England girls track and field took first and the boys second at the Class AA Lower State meet Saturday at Woodland High School in Dorchester.
The Lady Bishops racked up 121 points, winning by 37 points over Battery Creek. The Bishops boys team tallied 91 points, just missing first-place Woodland by five points.
Athletes had to finish in the top four of their events to qualify for the state championship meet May 16-17 in Columbia. Every girl who competed for Bishop England Saturday qualified for the state championship meet.
The Bishops relied on several athletes to turn in top finishes in multiple events. Sophomore Adele Blalock placed second (26.50) in the 200-meter dash, third (16.42) in the 100-meter hurdles, third in the 400 (1:01.55), and fourth in the pole vault (7-00). Senior Michele Boykin finished third (2:33.77) in the 800, fourth (5:40.27) in the 1,600, and fourth (12:57.10) in the 3,200. Jessica Dobbins took second (94-00) in the discus throw and fourth (30-06) in the shot-put. Bea Dibona won (12:33.94) the 3,200 and took third (5:39.97) in the 1,600.
Emma Lawrence placed second (5:39.28) in the 1,600, JoJo Tompkins second (12:44.13) in the 3,200, Montana Swanson fourth (1:12.32) in the 400 hurdles, and Maddie Conway third (8-0) in the pole vault.
Bishop England finished second (4:17.28) in the 400 relay and second in the 800 relay (10:36.89).
Christian Widenhouse led the Bishops boys team, winning the 1,600 (4:40.56) and the 3,200 (10:44.16), and placing fourth (2:09.29) in the 800.
Kurt Stieby took fourth (58.83) in the 400 hurdles, Thomas Hanahan third (2:08.96) in the 800. Christian Furmanchik placed second in the discus throw; Albert Lang took third (5-10) and Lawton Fosberry fourth( 5-08) in the high jump; Luke Vettel finished second (9-06) with Sam Lemon third in the pole vault. The Bishops placed third (8:37.97) in the 800 relay and fourth (3:31.29) in the 400 relay.
