Letters to the Editor

  • Wednesday, May 14, 2014

I am seriously upset with the Post and Courier’s proclivity for publishing letters from writers who wail and gnash their teeth regarding the concealed carry laws in South Carolina. The letter writers seem obsessed with promoting the viewpoint that the Palmetto State is advocating a “Wild West” society when in fact the records are clear that the only cowboys brandishing handguns in a shoot first, ask questions later fashion are the police officers who have managed to shoot citizens on an average of one per week for the last year.

Cane-carrying septuagenarians and senior citizens in their own driveways appear to be convenient targets for the Oakley-sunglass-wearing, pistol-packing deputies who ride the range in this state, not the tax-paying public who carry their weapons in defense of their persons and property.

I have just read an article about six extraordinary and concerned Republicans who are willing to “put their money where their mouth is” and are willing to run against an incumbent senator in South Carolina.

They all echo the same story about incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been in office too long and has forgotten that he is a senator from South Carolina and not first-in-command in this country. He demonstrates his aloofness to his constituency by declining the Post’s request to even comment on his opponents’ concerns over his stand on many issues that cause concern among people in South Carolina.

Unfortunately, the old “divide and conquer” theory will “hold true”; dividing dissenting votes among six candidates will, most likely, insure his nomination as the Republican candidate for the Senate. It is a shame that these six candidates cannot or could not come to some kind of agreement that they all are running in the primary for essentially the same reason and find one of them to focus all of their energies on to unseat a senator who seems to have lost his way once he left South Carolina and became part of the problematic D.C. asylum.
