More celebs added to charity golf tournament

  • Thursday, May 15, 2014

Joining NEEDTOBREATHE on the golf course this month will be musicians Drew and Ellie Holcomb, Steven Curtis Chapman and Ed Roland of Collective Soul. Professional golfers Kevin Streelman along with hometown golfer Russell Henley will take to the links to help raise money for Charleston area nonprofit Palmetto Medical Initiative.

The NEEDTOBREATHE Classic presented by Commonwealth Cares Foundation begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20 on both the Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek courses on Daniel Island. Additional celebrity players are Matt Diaz of the Miami Marlins: Todd Ellis, voice of the Gamecocks; actor Justin Wheelon; and musicians Ben Rector and John Mark McMillan.

Last year’s tournament raised more than $80,000 for PMI, which is building sustainable medical clinics around the world, including Uganda and Nicaragua. PMI recently announced plans to expand its efforts into Burundi. The proceeds from the 2013 NEEDTOBREATHE Classic were used to construct a medical clinic in El Viejo, Nicaragua, which was dedicated in January 2014. This year’s tournament proceeds will benefit another East African clinic in Uganda, with work slated to begin in January 2015.

Cost for the NEEDTOBREATHE Classic is $300 for individual player registration and $1,200 for a team of four. A few spaces remain; register online at www.commonwealthcares.org.

NEEDTOBREATHE and other musicians will perform at an after-party concert and auction for sponsors and players (separate VIP ticket available for purchase with golf registration). The live auction includes fan experience packages from Zac Brown Band, Ben Rector and Dave Matthews Band plus items signed by Maroon 5, Green Day and Katy Perry.
