Bishops boys and girls both advance in AA playoffs to face Magnet

Bishop England boys soccer rolled past Loris, 7-2, in the second round of the Class AA playoffs to set up a showdown with Region VI rival Academic Magnet.

The Bishops, ranked No. 4 in AA, will travel to AA No. 1 Magnet Saturday to play for a bid to the Lower State championship game. Magnet defeated Bishop England, 2-0, in their regular season meeting.

Joel Bunting powered Bishop England (12-9) with four goals and an assist Friday, including three goals to open the game. Bunting scored in the sixth minute off an assist from Michael Heyward, in the 23rd minute from Zachary Khoury and again in the 24th minute.

Freddy Brown set up Marc Mackunis for a goal in the 46th minute. Bunting scored his fourth in the 57th minute from Adam Mikulski. Mackunis struck a minute later in the 58th minute off an assist from Bunting. Russell McLaughlin netted the Bishops' seventh in the 56th minute from Drew Atkins.

Marquel Bellamy scored both goals for Loris (16-4).

The Bishop England Lady Bishops downed Waccamaw, 2-1, Friday at home to advance to the Lower State championship game against Academic Magnet.

Bishop England (15-4-1) and Academic Magnet (20-1-1) will meet in the Lower State title game for the third straight year. Magnet has eliminated the Bishops from the postseason for consecutive seasons and won the regular-season meeting, 1-0.
