May Carolina Gold Rice events at Middleton Place

  • Sunday, May 18, 2014

May ushers in the time of year at Middleton Place when the planting and educational programming focus is rice culture. Carolina Gold Rice, the variety of rice developed in the 19th century, was favored by Lowcountry planters and brought great wealth to the Carolina Lowcountry and the Middleton family. Rice programming begins on May 15, 16 and 17 with “hands on” rice planting and continues on Wednesday, May 21 with an “Evening with Jonathan Green,” an event celebrating Carolina Gold Rice at the Butterfly Lakes.

To celebrate Carolina Gold rice, a variation of the popular wine strolls is planned for Wednesday, May 21. An “Evening with Jonathan Green” will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Butterfly Lakes of Middleton Place. Green, chairman of the Lowcounty Rice Culture Project, is known for his “narrative realism” approach to painting and captures the rich cultural history of the Gullah community in which he was raised.

Limited edition Le Creuset “Gullah Blue” mini-cocottes, specially packaged with Jonathan Green artwork, will be available for purchase, as well as a “Carolina Gold Rice” Colonial Candle of which a portion of the proceeds go directly to the Lowcountry Rice Culture Project. The Middleton Place Museum Shop will also have additional Jonathan Green items available for purchase and autograph.

Middleton Place Restaurant Executive Chef Brandon Buck will create hors d'oeuvres with a Carolina Gold rice influence for the evening. In addition, Holy City Brewing will pour Dorchester Light, a rice lager brewed with Carolina Gold rice described as “a thirst-quenching homage to local farming and brewing tradition.”

Tickets for the event may be purchased in advance online at www.middletonplace.org or the night of the event and will be $35 per person.

The mission of the Middleton Place Foundation, a public nonprofit educational trust, is to sustain the highest levels of preservation and interpretation for the Middleton Place National Historic Landmark, its gardens, house, plantation stableyards and affiliated properties, such as the Edmondston-Alston House, and their collections and programs. Middleton Place and the Middleton Place Restaurant are located at 4300 Ashley River Road, Charleston, South Carolina.
