Wando boys and girls track both placed second at the Class AAAA state championships Saturday at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.
The Lady Warriors tallied 54 points to finish 10 ahead of third-place Northwestern and 17 behind state champion J.L. Mann.
Senior Angelica Collins won the triple jump (38 feet, 4 inches), placed second in the long jump (20-1) and fourth in the 100 (12.20 seconds). Her long jump broke the state meet record and fell just 1¼ inches short of first-place Jasmine Quinn of Fort Dorchester.
Sarah Lee, a Naval Academy signee, placed second (12-0) in the pole vault with Kendall Mercer right behind her in third (11-6) and Taylor Arent in fifth (10-0).
The Wando boys scored 50 team points, 15 ahead of third-place Sumter and 42.5 off of state champion Northwestern.
Junior Kenny Waring won the long jump (23-02.75) and placed fourth in the 200 (21.95). Peter Pinkney took second in the 200 (21.95). Waring and Pinkney were both part of the Warriors team that won the 100-meter relay (42.10).
Kato Junior placed third in the 400 hurdles (55.40) and Terrel Venning took third in the discus (159-04).
