The USS Hobson held its annual convention in Charleston on April 25-27. The USS Hobson was training with the aircraft carrier USS Wasp on April 26, 1952, when the Wasp turned into the wind. The Hobson failed to receive the turning signal and the ill-fated Hobson was split in two. Out of a total crew of 245, 167 perished that night. A memorial service was conducted at the Memorial of the USS Hobson in downtown Charleston with four of the remaining survivors.
