Take advantage of all the library has to offer

  • Monday, May 19, 2014

There’s never been a better time to be a Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) cardholder.

Not only are we committed to providing Charleston County residents with a large selection of what might be considered traditional materials – books, magazines, books on CD, DVDs – we are also committed to providing an increasing selection of electronic materials.

There are two recent changes that I particularly want to bring to your attention, regarding Freegal and Zinio.

Freegal is our downloadable music service. For several years, our cardholders have been able to download three songs each week – free and theirs to keep forever. Then, earlier this year, we added music videos, which count for two music downloads.

Just this week, we have had our limit increased to five music downloads per week. Think about it. If an album has 10 songs, you can download the entire album in just two weeks (or two days, if you get half on Sunday and half on Monday).

So, you can download all of “G I R L” by Pharrell Williams in those two days. “Love in the Future” by John Legend, with 20 tracks, will take you a little longer. Then there’s “Xscape” by Michael Jackson, Shakira’s newest self-titled album, “Supermodel” by Foster the People and more music from the cast of “Glee” than you’ll ever need. Many, many more songs and albums are available in all genres. Free.

Zinio is our downloadable magazine service, and we recently increased our selections to more than 160 titles – yours to download, read and discard when finished – always at no cost to you. (Think of all the trees you can save.)

Now, you can find newly added titles from the U.K., including “HELLO! Magazine,” “World Soccer,” and “Country Homes and Interiors.” We’ve added “Buen Hogar” (“Good Housekeeping” in Spanish), a couple of new wedding titles, some new magazines about jewelry making, several new sports magazines and many others.

Take a look at what’s available, set up your account and enjoy some new reading material. All you need is your library card.

Are you finding it difficult to get to the library to get a card? If you enjoy the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market on Coleman Boulevard, you can see us there on the first Tuesday of each month. The next date for our table is June 3.

When we’re at the farmers market, you can fill out your application and we’ll give you a library card there. You’ll just have to wait 24 hours until we can input your information and activate your card. Make sure you bring your photo ID; if it shows your Charleston County address, that’s all you’ll need. If not, you’ll also need some documentation, such as a piece of mail with your home address, to show that you live in Charleston County.

Exciting things are happening at CCPL. As a Charleston County resident, you deserve to take advantage of them.
