Get your praise on and raise the roof

  • Thursday, May 22, 2014

Nothing goes better together than gospel and gumbo, unless it’s gospel, gumbo and a good cause. And that’s what makes “Raise de Roof,” a gospel and gumbo competition to benefit Operation Home, the place you have to be on Sunday, July 13.

Is your amateur gospel choir ready to share your music? Then this is the event for you. And do you have a recipe for gumbo that leaves other recipes in the dust? We want you, too.

Competition for both the gospel and gumbo events is open to residents of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties in the state of South Carolina.

Gospel choirs must be amateur and nonprofit. Gumbo contestants can be professional or amateur chefs. Registration fee for each competition is $25. Space is limited to 20 contestants in each category, so sign up early. Plus, besides helping Operation Home, we’re awarding prizes that make this competition very worthwhile. First place in the choir competition wins $1,000, second receives $500, and third place is $200.

Gumbo contestants need to provide enough gumbo and rice for approximately 50 people to sample (about 2˝ gallons). First place wins $500, second place gets $200, and third place, $100.

“Raise de Roof” will be held on Sunday, July 13, at the Joseph P. Riley Park (baseball stadium), 360 Fishburne St., Charleston. Gates open at 2 p.m. The gospel competition starts at 3 p.m., the gumbo judging is at 5 p.m.
