There's a new kid on the block for the Moultrie News this summer.
Rickey Dennis, Jr., commonly known by his middle name Ciapha, will be spending his summer serving as the newly hired intern for East Cooper's weekly community newspaper.
Dennis was awarded the 10-week internship, which began on May 19, by the South Carolina Press Association (SCPA). After a recommendation from a professor, the SCPA agreed that the Charleston native would be a valid candidate to join the team at Moultrie.
“I am extremely humbled and excited for the opportunity,” said Dennis in reaction to the internship.
“I want to gain as much experience as possible and serve the East Cooper community in any way I can.”
The son of Rickey and Tonya Dennis and a 2011 graduate of Summerville High School, Dennis currently is a rising senior at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he studies print journalism with a minor in professional business. He is actively involved on campus and serves in many of the university's media-related organizations, including positions as staff writer for the campus' multicultural newspaper, the Roddey McMillan Record, treasurer for the National Association of Black Journalists and public relations officer for Winthrop's American Marketing Association.
In his free time, Dennis enjoys playing basketball, reading, spending time with family and passionately serving his home church, Morris Brown AME, where he is an active member.
As far as the Moultrie News is concerned, Dennis can expect to gain all the experience he wishes. The newspaper will be assigning him to a variety of stories related to sports, business and current events. If he's handy enough, they'll even allow him to snap a photo or two.
