Wando senior Emily Pitts is either drawing or running, says her mother, and on May 5, she ran to Mount Pleasant Town Hall Council Chambers to receive the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild 2014 Scholarship award. A cross-country and track athlete with a passion for the arts, Pitts has received several local and state scholarships that will help her to study interior design at Anderson University in South Carolina.
“We are delighted to award Ms. Pitts the 2014 Mount Pleasant Artists Guild Scholarship,” said Mount Pleasant Artists Guild president and Culture, Arts and Pride Commission member Marie-Louise Moreto. “Each year, the Guild awards a $1,500 scholarship to a qualified high school senior living east of the Cooper who is seeking an undergraduate degree in an art-related field. We were impressed with Ms. Pitts' level of proficiency and talent and we wish her good luck with her college career.”
Ms. Pitts, who studied with Wando art teacher Mary Catherine Peeples, credits her teacher for guiding her interest in visual arts and for encouraging her to submit her portfolio to the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild for consideration.
“I would like to thank the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild for their generous contribution to the arts in the community and for reaching out to and fostering young artists. Their scholarship award will be put to great use and will allow me to pursue my passion,” said Pitts.
