34 West Theater Company opens shop

The 34 West Theater Company is thrilled to open their new venue downtown with the original comedy “Doo Wops and Beauty Shops” beginning in May.

Part theater, part sketch comedy, the musical is crafted to help you relax, unwind and laugh with friends. “We write most of the shows ourselves,” says playwright and co-founder of 34 West, Stephen Wayne. “It's Saturday Night Live meets Happy Days.”

34 West's venue is located at the base of the Bank of America Building at 200 Meeting St. Down the street from FIG, next to Dunkin' Donuts, their enchanting 50-seat theater is, well, rocking – if they do say so themselves.

“We've always found ourselves performing in unexpected venues,” says Wayne. “A gospel musical in a bluegrass bar in Brooklyn, a roaring ‘20's show in an off-Broadway cabaret – even staging an Old English poem in a medium-level prison.”

So it made complete sense for 34 West to open a permanent theater in a vacant yogurt shop downtown. Wayne states, “It's beautiful and classy and not what you'd expect at all.”
