Clerk warns of juror phone scam

  • Saturday, May 24, 2014

Charleston County Clerk of Court Julie J. Armstrong is warning residents of a current phone scam. Armstrong’s office is aware of three people so far who have received calls from someone claiming to be associated with the clerk’s office in an attempt to get money or personal information.

The three people who called the clerk’s office to inquire about the call said they did not fall for the scam. But Armstrong worries there may be more people out there who don’t know they were being taken advantage of and may have sent money or provided personal information. She has contacted the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

“Our jurors are the backbone of our judicial system and we value their service. I want the public to know that my office will never call anyone soliciting money or asking for personal identifiers,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong offers the following tips to citizens to help them avoid being a victim of the scam.

How to know if a call you receive from the Clerk of Court’s Office is legitimate:

– The Clerk of Court’s Office only calls jurors who have contacted our office regarding their service.

– The Clerk of Court’s Office never solicits money, credit card numbers or personal identifiers over the phone.

– When in doubt, ask for the caller’s phone number, name and title so you can verify it is someone official. Get their number, and then call the clerk’s office to report it at 843-958-5000.

What to do if you think you’ve received a call from a scammer:

– Call the clerk’s office at 843-958-5000 or the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office at 843-202-1700 and provide as many details as possible such as date/time/nature of the call.
