On Saturday, April 26, in the auditorium of the Charleston Charter Math and Science School, 90 children received recognition for their participation in the 2013-14 PTA Reflections Art Contest themed “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” Stiles Point Elementary, School of the Arts, Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary, Springfield Elementary, Fort Johnson Middle School and North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary were represented. The ceremony was well attended by community members and staff such as students, parents, teachers, principals and the team of judges.
The Reflections Awards Ceremony was presented by the Charleston County District IX PTA Board and hosted by Mrs. Mary Ann Taylor, District IX PTA Reflections Chair, retired teacher and former member of CCSD School Board of Trustees.
Young, promising artists were celebrated and applauded by a cheering audience for their original works in six categories plus a special artist division: Music, Visual Art, Dance, Literature, Photography and Film. Reflections offers four tiers of competition starting at the local schools, with those winners competing at the district level, then advancing to state judging and finally reaching the national level. The talented Charleston County winners who also passed the South Carolina state judging and went on to compete at the nationals were Vaibhav Mohanty, Mando Smoak, Logan Baker, Kabir Zaman and Maurice Wright. SCPTA State President Dr. Clifford Fulmore was also present to recognize the state winners.
Dr. Elizabeth Dillon, Charleston County PTA District President welcomed the families and gave her remarks of encouragement for the children to pursue their dreams and build on their wonderful artistic talents. Alongside Mrs. Mary Ann Taylor, Dr. Elizabeth Dillon awarded certificates, medals and trophies. The students proudly held up their awards for a photo shoot, compliments of Mrs. Beth Hendrix, event photographer.
