Veterans project receives Exchange Club grant

Bridges announced that it has received a $1,000 grant from the Exchange Club of Charleston. The funding was given to support Bridges' Lowcountry Veterans History Project.

The national Veterans History Project is a collaboration between the United States Congress, the Library of Congress and the American Folklife Center. Its purpose is to preserve and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from these veterans and better understand the realities of war.

Not only does this project ensure that the memories of the participating veterans are preserved for posterity, but both the volunteer interviewers and the veteran participants (many of whom are older adults) are enriched by the experience.

Copies of interview videos are shared with the families of those interviewed so that both adults and children in those families can benefit as well.

Bridges will bring the Veterans History Project to the Lowcountry. A number of local organizations, including Honor Flight Lowcountry, veterans groups and service agencies, hospice care providers and civic clubs, will be involved in its implementation.

According the National World War II Museum website, veterans from that conflict are dying at a rate of 550 per day. With the loss of these individuals, the country loses their memories of the sights, sounds, terrors and triumphs of this historic conflict.

For this reason, the focus of the Lowcountry Veterans History Project will be on these World War II veterans, followed by survivors from the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
