Texas Tech is making its first NCAA Super Regional appearance in school history after defeating top-seeded host Miami 4-0 in the Coral Gables Regional final. The regional championship was the Red Raiders’ first in school history.

Head coach Tim Tadlock is leading a remarkable turnaround in his second season with the Red Raiders. Texas Tech is 43-9 this season after going 26-30 last year. College of Charleston and Texas Tech are meeting for the first time ever.

Sophomore first baseman Eric Gutierrez is leading Texas Tech at the plate with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs while hitting .312. Sophomore outfielder Tyler Neslony is hitting .393 with a .614 slugging percentage, and senior Adam Kirsch has 10 home runs. The Red Raiders offense averages 6.2 runs per game, hitting .289 as a team.

Freshman left-hander Dylan Dusek and senior lefty Jonny Drozd are both 7-0 this season with nearly identical ERAs (2.08/2.09). Dusek has done his damage as a starter, while Drozd comes out of the bullpen. The Red Raiders average a strikeout every 1.4 innings pitched with a defense that boasts a .981 fielding percentage.

NCAA Tournament history

College of Charleston is making its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars are 12-10 and have now made the Super Regionals on two occasions. C of C’s first trip came to the Supers came in 2006 when Charleston played at Georgia Tech; 2006 was the only other season when C of C was an automatic bid. College of Charleston has been an at-large in the other four NCAA runs.

2014 marks the first time that College of Charleston has been a four seed in the Cougars’ six NCAA appearances.

Charleston’s last NCAA trip came in 2012 when the Cougars also landed in the Gainesville Regional as a three seed. C of C lost to Georgia Tech (8-4), defeated Bethune-Cookman (8-2) and then were eliminated by the Yellow Jackets (3-0) on Sunday. Florida won the regional.

C of C vs. ranked teams

College of Charleston has faced off against ranked teams in 38 games under Lee, for a record of 13-25. C of C opened 2014 with two wins in a series over North Carolina. C of C recently posted a 3-2 win over No. 8 Florida, the second overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars have defeated Coastal Carolina, while the Chanticleers were ranked on five occasions, and also defeated South Carolina and Alabama.

Score early, win late

College of Charleston has found immense success when scoring first this season. The Cougars are 30-2 when scoring first, compared to just 14-15 when opponents score first. Charleston is 36-2 when leading after six innings, but just 4-13 when trailing after six.

College of Charleston scored in the first inning in every single regional game and only trailed for two innings the entire weekend.
