As a realtor, John Settle knows the importance of education and this means more than just having “good” schools in the community. That's why he became involved with Reading With Realtors (RWR) eight years ago.

“I believe in the value of early childhood education and the significance of instilling in young children a desire to read,” said Settle. “Reading to and with these young people each week and seeing their faces light up is priceless,” he added.

Settle, who works at Carolina One Real Estate's downtown Broad Street office, recruited several of his fellow Carolina One realtors, friends and clients this year to read for a least one hour each week during the school year at Burns Elementary School in North Charleston.

RWR, inaugurated 8 years ago by the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors (CTAOR) and supported by realtors across the tri-county area has proved to be an effective and rewarding program.

Since the program's inception, test scores have improved significantly. MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) test scores from students in the RWR program were an average of two points higher than grade-level averages, according to CTAOR.

Last month near the end of the school year, Settle and dozens of his fellow tri-county realtors took students from Burns to the Isle of Palms for a fun morning at the beach. It was a fitting end to a “better than good” school year and a great start on a well-deserved summer vacation.
