More than 50 teams took to the beach for this year's Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition on Isle of Palms. Taking place on Saturday, June 7, the contest provided an opportunity for some of the area's most creative artists, architects and engineers of all ages to show off their skills and enjoy a great day in the sun.
This year's award for Best in Show went to the Bienkoski family for their patriotic sculpture entitled “Raising the Flag Over Iwo Jima.” Along with past Best in Show winners, the Bienkoskis will be added to the championship trophy, which is kept on display at the Isle of Palms Recreation Department. Stephen Bienkoski said the sculpture was “inspired by the men who served” and saw the competition as wonderful opportunity to work together with his family, saying, “It feels good to be a family and to make a memory like this.”
Other top winners in the competition included the “Game of Sand” drip castle by John Sease, Dustin Johnson and Tim Coker, who took home the award for Most Architectural, “IOP-Spoleto” by Allan West, Gene West, Stephen West and Meredith Yates which placed first in the Adult group, and winner of the Family category, “Bee On Me” by David, Matt and Jackson Burt and Maggie Van Thullenar.
