The Moultrie News and Mount Pleasant Recreation Department (MPRD) come together each week to feature a local track or cross-country athlete from East Cooper as part of MPRD spotlight.
Julia Olmo, 7, runs with the Mount Pleasant Track Club. She competes in the 800-meter dash, the 1,500, and the mini javelin.
If you could be anyone for a day, who would you be?
Olmo: I would like to be Taylor Swift because I think she is a great singer. She is also a good actress.
What’s your favorite Mount Pleasant restaurant?
O: My favorite restaurant is Chick-fil-A. I like to go there when they have Spirit Night for Laurel Hill Primary School. My sister and I like to play on the indoor playground.
What’s the best moment of your athletic career?
O: When I won the 1,500-meter race during my first track meet at the Park West Recreation Center. I remember Coach Tami (Dennis) waiting for me at the finish line and cheering me on.
What’s the best advice you’ve received from a coach?
O: Coach Michael (Flournoy) taught me how to hold the javelin so it will go straight and far. I am still working on doing it right all the time.
What do you look forward to most about being an adult?
O: I look forward to being a coach some day for the Mount Pleasant Track Club. I also think it would be great to drive a car.
What are the most difficult, and what are the most fun aspects of track?
O: I think throwing the javelin is the most fun part. I like to throw it as far as I can. Practicing for the long-distance runs is tough because we have to run so far. I think it helps me though, because I have won three of the races so far.
What is your favorite movie and favorite TV show?
O: My favorite movie is “Aquamarine” because I like mermaids. My favorite TV show is “Jessie” because she is funny and they live in New York City near where we used to live.
If you could have dinner with any three people, who would you choose?
O: If I could have dinner with any three people, I would choose Taylor Swift, Coach Michael and my best friend, Ainsley. We probably wouldn’t go to Chick-fil-A though.
