“The Islands” covers more than 200 years of East Cooper history. PROVIDED

Author and historian Suzannah Smith Miles will be signing her new coffee table book, “The Islands: Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms, An Illustrated History” as part of Barnes and Noble's Authors' Gala and 15th Anniversary Celebration, Saturday, June 14, from 1-4 p.m.

More than 200 years of history are told in exceptional detail in “The Islands,” with chapters on the Sewee Indians, Charleston's early watchtowers and lighthouses, the African-American experience, the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Sullivan's Island's original Moultrieville settlement, hurricanes, the barrier island environment, the early lifesaving service and the plantation settlement on Long Island before 1898 when it became the popular resort island known as Isle of Palms. “The Islands” is 160 pages and includes more than 200 historical photographs, maps and prints plus annotated notes, bibliography and index.

Long applauded as a writer who makes history a joy to read, this book is a crowning achievement for Suzannah Smith Miles, who is widely known for her previous writings on the history of the East Cooper area.
