Does a cat really have nine lives? One would think so after meeting Matt Pardieck’s 22-year-old cat, Magee.

Matt found him in 1993 as a stray. Naturally, there were no veterinary records, but the vet that Pardieck and Magee visited guessed he was about one year old at the time.

“Magee was a stray, but he actually found me,” said Pardieck.

He was a flight instructor in Indianapolis and this mangy, flea-bitten cat came up to him and started rubbing on his leg. Pardieck thought it was cute, but his girlfriend at the time was not thrilled with the idea of taking in a stray cat. But the next day, the cat did the same thing. Pardieck fed him and eventually decided to take the poor fellow in. “He was too friendly to be a stray or a feral cat,” Pardieck said. “He claimed us.”

Even at 22 years old, Magee is as friendly as he can be. He’s never met a person he didn’t like, Pardieck said. And he’ll take all the attention you can give him.

Only one time did Magee try to escape, and that’s when Matt learned the cat was afraid of thunderstorms.

Old Magee didn’t start slowing down until about three years ago, he said. But up until then, the cat loved to play. One time, Magee crouched for a bird and jumped up no less than six feet and snagged the bird with his claws.

He’s a little bit feeble now and chooses to be an inside kitty.

And while Magee’s age is impressive, so is his size. He’s got the look of a tomcat, and could be considered a “puppy kitty.”

According to Animal Planet:

– A cat can reach up to five times its own height per jump.

– A cat’s heart beats nearly twice as fast as a human heart, about 110 to 140 beats per minute.

– Outdoor cats’ lifespans average at about three to five years; indoor cats have lives that last 16 years or more.

– Today, cats are living twice as long as they did just 50 years ago.
