College of Charleston volleyball releases 2014 schedule

College of Charleston volleyball will return to the court this fall with another challenging schedule as the Cougars look to defend their 2013 CAA championship.

CofC will play 15 home matches at TD Arena and travel to competition in Texas and Georgia along with CAA competition in the conference's six-state footprint.

“We are excited about another challenging schedule in 2014,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We have two strong home tournaments and trips to Georgia and SMU. We are also looking forward to playing Elon again in conference play, along with another strong group of CAA teams. We certainly lost a very successful senior class, but we have a great group returning and a number of newcomers that can make an impact on this level very quickly.”

Charleston is coming off another fantastic season in 2013 as the Cougars went 13-1 in their inaugural season in the CAA, en route to a CAA Tournament championship. College of Charleston won its 13th-straight conference regular or tournament championship in 2013, ranking as the second-longest streak in the nation.

The season opens on Aug. 29 when CofC hosts Davidson, Mercer and Kent State in a four-team tournament at TD Arena. After a home mid-week match against Eastern Washington, CofC travels to Georgia to play Belmont, Chattanooga and the host Bulldogs in a weekend tournament. Georgia earned an at-large bid last season and played in CofC's NCAA Tournament foursome at Duke.

The CofC Classic begins on Sept. 12 when Wake Forest, Stetson and Cal State Fullerton descend on the Charleston campus. The Cougars' last tournament weekend will be on September 19 when CofC heads to Texas to play New Mexico, SMU and Houston Baptist on the SMU campus in Dallas. The Cougars and Mustangs faced off last year with SMU taking a 3-1 victory.

Conference play begins at home on Sept. 26 when College of Charleston hosts Towson and Delaware on Friday and Sunday. CAA play will alternate home and away weekends for the rest of the season with the only except being Wednesday matches at UNCW (Oct. 15) and at Northeastern (Nov. 12).

The CAA welcomes Charleston's long-time SoCon rival Elon to the fold this season. The Cougars will play Elon on the road on Oct. 19, followed by a home match on Senior Day on Nov. 8.

CofC returns 10 players from last year's championship squad. Four All-CAA honorees will be in the starting lineup including Sloane White (First Team), Cara Howley (Second Team), Melissa Morello (Third Team) and Kallie McKown (Setter of the Year).

The Cougars will miss the outstanding play of All-America Honorable Mention honoree Darcy Dorton. Dorton was the CAA Player of the Year and Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She led the team with 392 kills and 437 total points, ranking second in the CAA. CofC also loses All-CAA Third Team performer Kerstin Koehler, who led the conference in hitting percentage (.330), middle blocker Emily Neideffer and setter Taeler Davis.
