The Kickin’ Chicken distributed more than $7,500 in scholarships to employees and Lowcountry schools at their annual Giving Back Brunch held on Tuesday, June 3, at their West Ashley location.
Three scholarships were handed out during the event. Sarah Brown, Kensley Gray and Samantha Homan, all employees of The Kickin’ Chicken, received $2,000 each to contribute to their college educations. Each year, the owners award recipients who embrace the mission of commitment, customer and community, both in the restaurant and in their personal lives through school and volunteer activities. Sarah Brown, a pre-med major at Emory University, has worked at the West Ashley location for more than four years. Kensley Gray, a physical education major at College of Charleston, has worked at the James Island location for almost three years. Samantha Homan, an early childhood education major at College of Charleston, has worked at the downtown location for one year.
The Kickin’ Chicken also provides one of its employees with a full culinary scholarship to Trident Technical College’s Culinary Institute of Charleston. Robbie Durham, a kitchen employee at the James Island location, will be entering his second year with the culinary program and continues to excel and maintain his scholarship.
Three Lowcountry elementary schools also received monies from the restaurant group. Throughout the 2013-2014 school year, Harborview Elementary School, Orange Grove Elementary Charter School and Mason Preparatory School held spirit nights at three of The Kickin’ Chicken restaurants. Throughout the year, each school raised approximately $500 each. “We love working with local schools,” said Ryan Wheatley, operating partner and general manager of the West Ashley location. “It’s great seeing the kids get so excited when they see us walk in with our Kickin’ Chicken shirts and Kickin’ nuggets. We look forward to expanding our reach to other area schools this fall.”
