The Mount Pleasant Police Department hosted a Junior Summer Safety Camp last week at Whitesides Elementary School.

This free camp was open to children ages 5 to 10 years old.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department Junior Summer Safety Camp is designed to educate young people on a variety of safety topics and to build positive relationships with the community.

The safety topics included: fire safety, home safety, stranger danger, bike safety, gun safety, animal safety, finger printing and more.

Cpl. Bill Dorfner was joined by fellow school resource officers to manage the 20 children who attended. The half-day camp was chock-full of games, activities and opportunities to learn about safety.

Members of the department's bike patrol, SWAT team, K9 Unit and ATF representatives spoke to the children throughout the week. Jennifer Senn of Safe Routes to School, the Lowcountry School Outreach coordinator, was on hand as well to talk about the importance of wearing helmets while cycling.

Jenny Winkleman of Safe Kids, a program run by MUSC, was also a representative of safety initiatives.

The summer camp will be held annually along with other year-long intitaives the department hosts and sponsors, aimed at youth.
