A Charleston woman and man raised more than $110,500 for blood cancer research and patient services, making them the winner of this year's Man and Woman of the Year of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's South Carolina Chapter.
The two winners, Dr. Matthew Beldner of Charleston (Lowcountry Hematology and Oncology, Roper St. Francis Physicians) and Ellen Hoffman of Charleston (Nirenblatt, Nirenblatt and Hoffman, LLP), were the top local fundraisers and will now be entered into the national competition for Man and Woman of the Year.
During a 10-week fundraising period beginning with a kick-off celebration, the candidates were judged solely on their success in generating funds to advance the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Every dollar raised counts as one “vote.” Dr. Beldner and Ellen were the candidates with the most votes, and were awarded the titles of 2014 Man and Woman of the Year at a grand finale celebration on June 6. The candidates competed in honor of the society's Boy and Girl of the Year, local children who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others. Krista Dick of Summerville and Jesse Dasinger of Charleston served as Girl and Boy of the Year in 2014. The organization extends a special thank you to Steven Meyer of UBS Financial Services, Dr. Amit Agrawal of MUSC and Eastern Maine Medical Center, and Austin Atkinson of Atkinson Athletics and Legacy Wealth Management who ran as candidates in the campaign.
“Man and Woman of the Year is a great opportunity for participants to network with other candidates while raising money for a great cause,” said Paul Jeter, the South Carolina executive director. “Candidates gain personal and professional exposure in the Charleston community while they help others.”
