My friend Susan recently pointed out a new book that just arrived at our library, written by one of my favorite authors, Nick Hornby. I was thrilled to discover it. It's called “Ten Years in the Tub: A Decade Soaking in Great Books,” and it's a compendium of 10 years' worth of book reviews from Hornby's column in a magazine called “The Believer.”
Each column starts with two lists, entitled “Books Bought” and “Books Read,” and then Hornby goes on to give you his thoughts on the books he has read, and sometimes also on the authors, the subject matter and/or anything else that is tangentially related in his own mind.
Sometimes I agreed with Hornby's assessment of a book and sometimes I didn't, but I was always entertained.
Nancy Pearl is another author who appears to read voraciously and who writes about books. We have quite a few titles by her in our system. I discovered her with “Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment and Reason.” She went on to write “More Book Lust,” and “Book Lust to Go: Recommended Reading for Travelers, Vagabonds and Dreamers.” She also has three volumes of “Now Read This: A Guide to Mainstream Fiction,” as well as “Book Crush: For Kids and Teens.”
If you're looking for books for children (preschool to eighth grade or so), my very favorite option is “The Read-Aloud Handbook” by Jim Trelease. This book is full of wonderful suggestions for kids of all ages and will help you to find more great books than you can probably ever find time to read in this lifetime.
