This week in print – Vol. 1 No. 1 issue of the Moultrie News was printed May 28, 1964

In April of 1976, Sullivan's Island was gearing up to celebrate their bicentennial and the country was just learning about a new flu called Swine Flu.

There was exciting news on the waterfront as the South Carolina Ports Authority began measures to make Charleston the principal connecting port between the U.S. and the Middle East. At the time, U.S. exports to the Middle East were predicted to be $13 billion with Charleston handling only $7 million of that.

The Yorktown had only just arrived to the harbor a year prior. On Jan. 3, 1976 the museum at Patriots Point was opened to the public. One year after the ship's arrival, the museum received their 100,000th paid visitor.

At Berkeley Drugs, you could find just about anything you needed, such as Sea and Ski sun lotion for $1.39 or Hawaiian Tropic professional tanning oil for $2.99.

A 44-quart Styrofoam cooler only cost $1.99 and you could put a six pack of Pepsi in it for 99 cents.

James Edward Wear was selected to serve as the Sullivan's Island police chief in 1976. The 31-year-old was a Sullivan's Island native.

And, just like the Moultrie News is doing today, there was a contest in which readers could win $50 if they found and submitted their oldest copy of the Moultrie News. It was a way to obtain archives and celebrate serving the community for more than a decade.

In 1964, Carol Elizabeth Clement was the salutatorian for the class of 1964 at Moultrie High School.

Her picture was on the front page and her parents saved that issue.

She found it and won the $50 prize in return for a copy of Vol. 1 No. 1 of the Moultrie News published May 28, 1964.

We're still looking for old copies too. Share your clippings and Moultrie News memories with us by emailing editor@moultrienews.com.
