Pirate Festival seeks poster entries

  • Friday, June 20, 2014

The Charleston Pirate Festival is looking for entries for its annual poster contest. PROVIDED

The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, the Friends of the Old Exchange and the Charleston Maritime Center are pleased to announce the second annual Charleston Pirate Festival. Last year exceeded expectations; families from all over the Lowcountry and abroad to take advantage of this event. The second annual festival has even more to offer this year. This remains a free, family event and will be held once again on the grounds of the Charleston Maritime Center on Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Children are invited to submit their poster designs for the Pirate Festival. Three categories will be accepted. First will be the Lil' Buccaneer for ages 5 and under, the First Mate category for ages 6-9 and the Rovers category for ages 10-13. Second and third places in each division will be awarded ribbons, while the first-place selections will receive a prize package. One grand prize winner will have their artwork selected for use in the 2015 third annual Charleston Pirate Festival. Submissions can be sent via email to cokerm@charleston-sc.gov, or by mail to the Old Exchange at 122 East Bay St., Charleston, South Carolina, 29401. Winners will be selected on originality, content and fun. All entries will be on display the day of the festival. All submissions must be received by July 28.

The Charleston Pirate Festival recalls the “Golden Age of Piracy,” when Charleston was visited by pirates like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. This event will feature pirate-themed activities for families and children alike. Colonial and maritime history booths will be set up by Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, The Powder Magazine, Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site, Charles Town Landing, The GIbbes Museum of Art, The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, The United States Coast Guard, The Friends of the Hunley, Caw Caw County Park, South Carolina Aquarium, South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Walled City Task Force.
