Charleston Moves, a nonprofit bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization, is pleased to announce the successful completion of a national search with the hiring of Kurt Cavanaugh as the organization's full-time executive director, effective August 4.

Mr. Cavanaugh comes to Charleston from Brooklyn, New York, where he most recently served as deputy director of the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), a park conservancy organization responsible for maintaining North Brooklyn's 100-plus parks, playgrounds and green spaces.

Mr. Cavanaugh's experience includes work in historic preservation, safe and sustainable transportation, land use/zoning and park management. He is the co-founder of Greensboro, North Carolina's bicycle advocacy organization (Bicycling In Greensboro – BIG), where he helped catalyze bike/ped infrastructure improvements resulting in Greensboro being named a top-40 bicycling city in 2010 by Bicycling Magazine.

“We are delighted to welcome Kurt to Charleston, and are confident that his leadership will take Charleston Moves to the next level in improving the bicycle and pedestrian landscape in the region,” says Stephanie Hunt, Board chair. “Thanks to the bold and visionary leadership of Tom Bradford, our tireless volunteer acting director, we have made enormous strides in recent years. Kurt comes to a region primed to become a premier walking/biking community, and we look forward to working with him to improve mobility and quality of life for all citizens.”

Charleston Moves will be opening a new office space at 1600 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina, and continues to welcome and encourage business partners and community members to support their work in making Charleston a healthier, safer, more bicycle-friendly community.
