In 1977, Mount Pleasant Town Council vowed to take a stand against a proposed port on the Wando River. Residents of Hobcaw and surrounding areas fought tirelessly against the construction. But it was not to be.
Today, Wando Welch Terminal (WWT) has received worldwide recognition for its innovative design and overall terminal productivity. Opened in 1982, the final stage of terminal construction was recently completed in the form of a fourth container berth, three new post-Panamax container cranes and nearly 90 acres of additional container storage space. At present, it is the port’s largest terminal in terms of volume and physical size.
Newcomers might not be aware that there used to be an airport on the Isle of Palms. And in 1977, the Isle of Palms airport won a standing reprieve from closing. The Charleston County Aviation Authority renewed the airport’s lease from The Beach Company and gave it a face-lift. The county leased the property from The Beach Company for $1 a year. At the time, it was the only landing facility east of the Cooper. The county’s master plan called for a larger, general aviation airport off of Hwy. 17, but in a 1977 Moultrie News article, that facility was planned for far into the future.
The great challenge of tangling with Strom Thurmond for his U.S. Senate seat could tilt the political scales for Democrat Charles “Pug” Ravenel in 1978 was the lead topic in an article outlining Ravenel’s hopes for political office.
He conceded that he would “rather run against Senator Thurmond (as opposed to running for governor) because he’s so good. Because he’s such a great challenge. He’s been there such a long time and he’s viewed as invincible.” And this was in 1978. Thurmond represented South Carolina in the United States Senate from 1954 until 2003.
And who would have thought that in 1978, “great changes” were going on in sex education offered in South Carolina public schools?
According to the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), with many more advanced degree health educators available to work in the school system, “sex education is finally emerging as a respectable part of the total health learning offered.” The emerging learning offered tips in contraceptives and avoiding venereal diseases.
