For those looking to enjoy fresh seafood from Charleston's harbor, paddle-boating, fishing from the docks, a stroll on the pier or sight-seeing coastal wildlife from a water taxi, Mount Pleasant's Shem Creek is the place to be.

Located just off Charleston Harbor, the sunlit park filled with wildlife and flora hosts a variety of activities for incoming guests.

For $35, one may rent a kayak for up to four hours at the creek's Nature Adventures, which also offers three-hour stand-up paddleboard rentals for $28 and four-hour rentals for $32. Guided tours are also available for inquisitive guests. Nature Adventures is open seven days a week and can be contacted at 843-568-3222.

Coastal Expeditions, also located on the creek, provides affordable tours; one being the Bulls Island Ferry led by accredited naturalists and captains. Guests can expect to be enlightened on Charleston's marine life, as well as island habitats. For more information, call 843-881-4582 or email info@coastalexpeditions.com.

Or, maybe you'd like to catch a cab across the Cooper. Shem Creek is one of the stopping points for Charleston's Water Taxi. If you're looking to view wildlife and travel in style, water taxi services provide $20 round-trips from Shem Creek to downtown Charleston. Services are provided upon request at 843-330-2989.

However, a simple walk along the pier may suffice for more relaxed guests. Available for cycling, reading or a simple stroll, the creek's extensive pier provides a walkway leading to the waters and marshes of the heavily populated harbor. Fishing, preferably during low tide, is available and recommended for quality catches.

Fresh seafood can be purchased at three distinct locations: Mount Pleasant Seafood, Magwood Seafood and Geechie Seafood. Each serve freshly caught shrimp and other entrees provided by nearby shrimp boats.

From elaborate dine-in restaurants to bar-style hangouts, Shem Creek's dining options also include Water's Edge, Red's Ice House, RB's Seafood, Vickery's Bar and Grill, The Shelter, Shem Creek Bar and Grill and The Wreck.

Menus consist of scallops, New Orleans bbq shrimp, fried oysters, stone crab claws and desserts ranging from key lime pie to warm apple crisp.

After extensive excitement and a full stomach, guests yearning to stay another day at Shem Creek can spend a night at The Shem Creek Inn. For more information on lodging prices, contact 843-881-1000.
