Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester Counties discuss blue trail project

  • Tuesday, July 1, 2014

Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties Council of Governemnents (BCDCOG) discussed a possible blue trail project on Monday. Blue trails are waterways adopted by communities to be used for recreational activities. These projects emphasize preservation of land and water resources, healthy living and environmental protection through education and outreach. Similar to hiking trails, blue trails allow people to explore waterways.

The project would connect rivers throughout the counties. According to BCDCOG, a network of blue trails would enhance local economies. Referencing The Outdoor Foundation, a member of the council of governments said 113 million Americans enjoy fishing, paddling and trail activities yearly, generating 1.6 million jobs and $20 billion in state and federal revenue. Goals for the blue trail initiative include promoting outdoor tourism, addressing obesity among youth and adults, preserving history and community identity, and increasing environmental stewardship. The project will also attempt to improve connections between urban and rural communities as well.

The committee is currently determining fundraising strategies and seeking public outreach for the project.
