Top Yankees draft pick joins RiverDogs

  • Tuesday, July 1, 2014

The New York Yankees have announced that left-handed pitcher Jacob Lindgren will join the Charleston RiverDogs.

Lindgren, New York’s first selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, comes to Charleston from the Gulf Coast League Yankees 1.

Right-handed pitcher Chad Taylor also joins Lindgren as a new member of the RiverDogs. Charleston right-handed pitcher Brett Gerritse will be promoted to the Single-A Tampa Yankees while southpaw Evan Rutckyj has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 30. The RiverDogs will remain at their maximum of 25 active players.

Lindgren was the 55th overall pick in the Draft, taken by the Yankees in the second round out of Mississippi State. In 2013, Lindgren was a sophomore starter for the Bulldogs, which were the College World Series runner-up to UCLA.

During his junior season in 2014, he moved to the bullpen and posted stellar figures with a 6-1 record, a 0.81 ERA, three saves, and 100 strikeouts compared to 25 walks. Lindgren pitched a scoreless inning of relief on June 28 in a win over the GCL Yankees 2 in his professional debut.

Charleston begins a three-game road series at the Savannah Sand Gnats tonight at 7:05pm. The next RiverDogs homestand at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park begins on Friday, July 4 and lasts through Wednesday, July 9. Independence Day opens the homestand on an ISHPI Red Shirt Friday that ends with downtown Charleston’s only Fourth of July fireworks show. Tickets may be purchased at the Riley Park Box Office, (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or on-line at www.riverdogs.com. If fans cannot make it to the ballpark, they are encouraged to tune in to all the action this year both home and away worldwide on www.riverdogs.com and locally on 1250 WTMA, the new radio home for RiverDogs baseball.
