New app enhances community safety

  • Thursday, July 3, 2014

The Mount Pleasant Police Department (MPPD) announced the addition of a new mobile enabled social network that empowers citizens to use their smartphones to enhance community safety and awareness. The Mount Pleasant Police urge citizens to download the free VizSAFE app to their iPhones or Androids to post community safety issues and to support first responders by sharing visual safety content. Any photo or video captured using VizSAFE is instantly shared with other citizens and when appropriate with local law enforcement and other public safety agencies.

VizSAFE posts are geolocated and categorized so that the information is immediately useful to fellow citizens – whether the incident is a lost child, downed power line or a stray animal. And more serious incident reports, such as automobile accidents or fires can be responded to in real-time. “The citizens of Mount Pleasant are our greatest asset in keeping the community safe,” said Chief Carl Ritchie of the Mount Pleasant Police Department. Peter Mottur, CEO of VizSAFE added, “Looked at from the perspective of citizens, it is a way to actively engage in the well-being of their community. Looked at from the perspective of public safety and law enforcement, the crowd is a powerful force multiplier.”

The Mount Pleasant Police Department is also encouraging citizens to use this mobile app during special events within the town. “We want everyone attending the July 4th celebration at Patriots Point to use this app to report any suspicious behavior they may see,” says Inspector Chip Googe of the Mount Pleasant Police Department. “Anyone attending a major event within the Town of Mount Pleasant, from the Cooper River Bridge Run to the Christmas Parade, can play an important role in the safety of their community by providing real-time information concerning questionable activity.”

In addition to using VizSafe for events and daily calls, the Mount Pleasant Police Department is also creating a business connection within the application. This network of businesses will be able to receive critical information regarding shopliftings, thefts, crime prevention efforts and anything else that will impact the business community instantaneously. “Business owners and loss prevention officers will receive a push notification directly on their smart phone when we have vital information that will affect them”, states Inspector Googe. “The partnership formed with our businesses will only strengthen our crime reduction efforts and allow us to provide a higher level of police service.”

The free VizSAFE mobile app can be downloaded in iTunes and on Google Play or at www.vizsafe.com and features:

• Anonymously capture and post photos and videos with descriptions

• Upload previously captured media from the camera roll

• Geolocate and map incident reports for others to see through the app or website

• Receive notifications from family, friends and neighbors when new reports are posted

• Subscribe to channels (categories) of interest to receive real-time alerts

• Share posts or other users' posts through their Twitter or Facebook accounts
