Wando rising senior Elisa Aldrich committed to Florida Gulf Coast volleyball's 2015 recruiting class this week.
Aldrich, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter, helped Wando to 48 wins and a Class AAAA Lower State championship in 2013.
She finished the season ranked third in the state with 1.4 blocks per set and fifth with a .413 hitting percentage. She was selected to the Wando Invitational all-tournament team, Class AAAA All-State and All-Region VII.
FGCU finished 9-9 in the Division I Atlantic Sun Conference this season and picked up a win over Stetson in the conference tournament.
“I loved everything about the volleyball program and the school (FGCU),” Aldrich said. “I'm really excited to play Division I and I wanted to go to a school that wasn't just for volleyball. FGCU has so much to offer and I loved coach Matt Botsford. He is really serious about the program and wants to make FGCU a nationally-ranked team.”
Aldrich and her AAU club team, the Carolina Islanders, finished second in the nation at the AAU National Championships in June, where she was an all-tournament selection. Aldrich says the tournament was a great learning experience and that she's spending the rest of her summer preparing to help guide Wando back to the state championship.
“I'm working out a lot more than I used to trying to get in better shape and get stronger,” she said. “It's relieving knowing I don't have to worry about the recruiting process anymore but now I have to continue to be motivated and get better.
“As a senior, I expect us (Wando) to win state and win most, if not all, of the tournaments we go to this year.”
