Davis Strobel signed a National Letter of Intent this week to play rugby for Arkansas State University next season.

Strobel, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound hooker, guided Wando High School to a Rugby Football Club state championship and perfect 10-0 record as the Warriors' senior captain in 2014.

He scored nine tries his senior season on a Warriors team that outscored its opponents 293-27. He was named Man of the Match three times, including the state title game, and was selected as captain of the South Carolina all-star team.

“Arkansas State has a good rugby program that I know I can excel in and become a better player for the future,” Strobel said. “Also, the junior varsity and varsity teams practice together, so I will have a lot of exposure with the older and more experienced guys.”

Arkansas State is the two-time defending USA Rugby Sevens Collegiate National Champion. Strobel is the only incoming hooker in the Red Wolves' 2014 recruiting class and says he's optimistic about the opportunity to contribute early on the talented roster.

“It gives me more opportunities to play and show my skill,” he said. “I'm looking forward to training on a Division I college rugby team because all of the coaches will be top tier and everyone on the team will be 100 percent committed to training and doing well on and off the pitch.”
