It has been 25 years since Hurricane Hugo came upon our shores here in the Charleston County area. This unwelcomed weather event hit South Carolina and many other states before blowing itself out of existence.

There are many who were not here during this hurricane nor even know that there was such a major weather event that caused so much death and destruction to local areas of Charleston, Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms.

Byrtie Campbell witnessed this tragic time as a resident of Isle of Palms in 1989. She has always enjoyed photography and instinctively sought to record in pictures what she witnessed and experienced from Hurricane Hugo.

She has accumulated so many picture albums over the years.

Earlier this year, she realized that it has been 25 years since the storm. This was a time of great loss and struggle for so many. Almost 30 lives were lost in South Carolina and billions of dollars of damage was caused by Hurricane Hugo.

Byrtie organized her pictures of Hugo's destruction and has published the book “Hurricane Hugo 1989: 25 Years Ago.” It has just been made available at www.lulu.com.
