After much anticipation and renovations of an old yogurt shop, 34 West Theater Company is thrilled to open their new venue downtown with the original comedy “Doo Wops and Beauty Shops” beginning Friday July 11. Performances times include Tuesday at 7 p.m., Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Part theater, part sketch comedy, the musical is crafted to help you relax, unwind and laugh with friends. “We write most of the shows ourselves,” says playwright and co-founder of 34 West, Stephen Wayne. “It’s Saturday Night Live meets Happy Days.”
34 West’s venue is located at the corner of Meeting and Pinckney, at 200 Meeting St. A block away from FIG, their enchanting 60-seat theater is, well, rockin’ if they do say so themselves.
“We’ve always found ourselves performing in unexpected venues,” says Wayne. “A gospel musical in a bluegrass bar in Brooklyn, a Roaring ‘20s show in an off-Broadway cabaret – even staging an Old English poem in a medium-level prison.”
So it made complete sense for 34 West to open a permanent theater in a vacant yogurt shop downtown. Wayne states, “It’s beautiful and classy and not what you’d expect at all.”
Fun drinks and savory bites are standing by. Select beers, wines and sodas are all at arms length. They’ll also curate an assortment of tasty treats from Charleston’s finest each month. Tickets are $25, discounts given to groups of 10 or more. For tickets and more information about all their upcoming productions, visit www.34west.org or call 843-901-9343. All performances are located at 200 Meeting St. at the corner of Meeting/Pinckney (use the Pinckney entrance). A parking garage is available directly behind the theater.
