The Marion Marauders Society started their third Wreaths Across America (WAA) sponsorship year on July 1.
The WAA program is a nonprofit effort to place holiday wreaths on burial sites in national cemeteries within the United States.
The number of wreaths placed on burial sites depends on the number of wreaths purchased by individuals or businesses. The Marion Marauders function as representatives of WAA in an effort to streamline the purchase process.
SGM (Ret) Cecil Evans, president of the society, stated that their annual sponsorship began earlier than usual this year due to numerous inquiries from individuals and businesses as to how they could participate in the increasingly popular program.
“Having a longer sponsorship year, enables our society to make more contacts with interested parties, thus resulting in larger totals of purchases,” said Evans. “Our goal is to place wreaths on all burial sites if possible.”
The Marion Marauders represent the three national cemeteries within South Carolina: Beaufort National, Fort Jackson National and Florence National. Purchased wreaths can be designated for placement at any of the listed cemeteries.
To purchase a wreath, simply send a check payable to Wreaths Across America to Marion Marauders Society, 15 Vincent Drive, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina 29464. In the memo section of the check, please specify to which national cemetery you would like the wreath sent.
Wreaths Across America is a tax-deductible program and your purchase constitutes a tax-deductible donation.
Local businesses will have donation containers located in their buildings if you would like to make a donation.
All donated monies from the donation containers at these locations will be used by that business to purchase a wreath or wreaths in their name with the designated cemetery being their choice.
Wreath placements will be held this year on Saturday, Dec. 13, beginning at noon at all national cemeteries. The public is invited to take part in the placement of the wreaths.
The cost of each wreath is $15. For more information on the Wreaths Across America program, please call 843-881-8343.
