Lowcountry Local First launches Local Works

Lowcountry Local First is filling a much-needed niche in Charleston's burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem by developing Local Works, an open-sector coworking space in the creative corridor at 1630-2 Meeting St. in Charleston. Local Works is a low-cost, professional, open coworking space where local businesses can thrive in a creative and collaborative environment. The 3,000-square-foot facility will complement existing tech-sector spaces that are already up-and-running in Charleston.

Local Works will give tenants an opportunity for engagement and growth through member-hosted events, marketing tutorials, connecting to funding, meet-up groups, and other networking opportunities. Ongoing services will also be offered such as mentor pairing, facetime with successful entrepreneurs for brainstorming sessions, workshops and easy collaboration.

By aggregating businesses with varying specialties and focuses, Local Works will create a community ripe for partnerships. As interaction in the community grows, the likelihood of success for the businesses within it increases, creating a more powerful community to draw upon for assistance.

“It is vital that entrepreneurs spend a majority of their time on the important things regarding their business, especially in the start-up stages,” says Lowcountry Local First Community Manager Larry Downey. “When you can reach across the desk and ask someone who specializes in marketing or accounting a question, without having to spend hours on research, it allows you to stay focused on your mission. We are creating a community of businesses that want to work together and help each other succeed.”

Coworking spaces are emerging across the country and entrepreneurs are ready to break free from their home office or have worn out their welcome at the coffee shop. For those craving a more professional, collaborative, but still affordable environment, coworking is ideal. Local Works will be run as a nonprofit center with public and private supporters including the City of Charleston, Community Loan Fund and a recent award by the South Carolina Department of Commerce's Innovation Fund.

Local Works consists of two private offices, 24 full-time spaces and numerous part-time opportunities. Additionally, the space will hold a conference room, small meeting room, two phone booths, a kitchen with full amenities, and lounge area and breakout space. The private offices are taken, but part-time and full-time space is still available and Lowcountry Local First is taking applicants now.
